The Ultimate Guide to Taking 4-MMC, 3-MMC and Similar Drugs As Safely As Possible

‘Babe, 2010 called: They want their drugs back.’

A harm reduction guide, written by Simon Doherty

Right. Firstly, let’s get something out of the way, in case there’s any War on Drugs crusaders lurking in this blog:

All drugs have the ability to be dangerous. I’d recommend not taking them at all, which is the safest way to avoid any harm. In a utopian world, made up of rainbows and lollipops and unicorns, that’d actually happen. And we’d all sit cross-legged in a rosy garden, linking arms, gently swaying from left to right singing Kumbaya. But if you’re going to take drugs anyway despite the risks, which often happens in the real world, let’s learn how to sesh as safely as possible.

This is a guide on how to take mephedrone (MCAT) and similar drugs as safely as you can. Because it’s made an astonishing comeback in recent times, and what a journey it’s been on: The mid-to-late 2000s in the UK (shortly after the global financial crash when everyone was feeling the pinch and it was hard to get hold of decent MDMA) was a twitchy, horny, messy, montage of mephedrone. Proceedings reached a crescendo in 2010 when it defined the moment, becoming the proud centrepiece of the party scene. The high priest of the sesh.

So it was banned by the government that year, quality MDMA came back into the picture, and MCAT retreated into fringe subcultures like the queer chemsex scene. But, by 2026, in another cost of living crisis in the UK, we are seeing a renaissance of MCAT and similar drugs from the cathinone family. It’s bleeding back into mainstream electronic music culture once again. So, here’s everything to consider if you’re going to get on it and want to reduce potential harms.

Mephedrone (which is 4-MMC, full name 4-Methylmethcathinone) is a stimulant drug from the cathinone family. It’s synthetic, although it’s structurally similar to a naturally-occurring compound found in the leaves of the khat plant. It often comes as a sticky, crystalline powder (it can be beige, off-white, or white) and the most common way people consume it is to snort it. It can also be swallowed (wrapped in a rizla, for instance) or in a minority of cases slammed (injected). Testing for mephedrone is more important than ever right now, because in the current market you could be sold a whole slew of chemicals in its place. It’s like a chemical car boot sale out there…

Variants Are Everywhere

Taking cathinones in 2026 is very different to taking it when it exploded onto the scene in 2008, like a burst pipe, blindsiding the authorities and changing drug culture forever. Basically, if you approached someone at a student house party at the time, leaned in and shouted in their ear, competing with an aggressive dubstep bassline to ask for a bump, you’d almost certainly have been offered mephedrone, 4-MMC, the OG of the party cathinones. Famously a stimulant which smelled like cat piss, hurt when you snorted it, but kept you up all night, was euphoric, sociable, and gave some people the sex drive of a stegosaurus in its prime.

But now you could be getting a whole portfolio of ‘second-generation cathinones’. They share similar chemical structures, but have notable differences: 3-MMC (3-methylmethcathinone), 3-CMC (3-chloromethcathinone), 2-MMC (2-methylmethcathinone) are popular, for instance. There’s also dipentylone (dimethylpentylone) and methylone (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylcathinone) on the menu.

There’s a lot of individual differences when it comes to how a drug might affect someone, but many people describe these substances as producing more of a stimulant effect and less of the emotional, pro-social, empathogenic vibe of 4-MMC or the broadly similar variant 4-CMC. More like coke than MDMA. The danger can come if someone with 3-MMC keeps re-dosing trying to get to that loved-up place, they’re just going to get more and more stimulant effects instead, risking more side effects (which we’ll get on to).

NEP (⚠️)

More risky in the cathinone world is NEP (N-Ethyl-Pentedrone); a much stronger (2-3x stronger than 3-MMC) cathinone which should be treated with caution. That’s because it’s more associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular strain, heart palpitations, overheating, anxiety, paranoia, and other psychotic symptoms. Some users on higher doses of this have reported feeling watched, judged, and all consumed by a sense of persecution.

Given the variations on the market right now, testing as much as possible is key so you know what you’re dealing with. Depending on where you’re reading this, that might mean posting a sample to a postal checking service (like WEDINOS, for instance, if you’re in the UK), going to an in-person checking facility (like The Loop’s monthly sessions if you’re in Camden, Hackney or Bristol), or grabbing an EZ Test kit here

Testing is always best. But if you’re going to take it anyway without testing, take 1/3rd of a normal dose first, just to gauge the reaction. NEP in particular, you only need a whisper, a hamster’s eyelash, to get the full effects. If you take what would be one dose of, say, 3-MMC and it turns out to be NEP you will know about it and run the risk of more side effects.

‘Monkey Dust’ (⚠️)

Even more risky in the cathinone world is so-called ‘monkey dust’. What people refer to as ‘monkey dust’ is usually MDPV (Methylenedioxypyrovalerone)––it’s essentially a more potent, more compulsive, even more bingeable, smokable version of mephedrone. Also from the cathinone family but with the effects being more like meth or crack than legacy party drugs, it’s more associated with private chemsex settings. Having said that, I could smell it on the dancefloor at a festival in Germany recently (by all accounts, it stinks of stale cum), so I’m not sure if it’s creeping into different contexts. Either way, you don’t want to take this by accident, so grab an EZ Test kit

And just in case you’re not sufficiently confused yet, there are other drugs, cathinone cousins of MDPV, that are also sometimes referred to as monkey dust: MDPHP (3,4-methylenedioxy-alpha-pyrrolidinohexanophenone), α-PHP (α-Pyrrolidinohexiophenone), and α-PHiP (α-Pyrrolidinoisohexanophenone), for instance. They’re all more risky than traditional cathinones. If it’s smoked it’s hard not to compulsively binge it, and doing so is likely to result in varying degrees of anxiety, panic, agitation, or even psychotic episodes. On top of that, the risk of overheating, severely high blood pressure, severely high heart rate, passing out, and breathing problems are higher.

I’m not in the business of judging or telling people what drugs they should or should not use, but I will say that if you don’t want an experience that’s like smoking meth or crack, you wouldn’t want monkey dust. It’s a difficult beast to tame. If you’re struggling with monkey dust and want some support, get in touch with chemsex-focused charities like Controlling Chemsex, Antidote, or 56 Dean Street

Start Low, Go Slow, Stay Hydrated

As always, pace yourself, create your own tempo for the sesh, and know your limits. Start with a small dose, try to avoid re-dosing for an hour, and try to space out doses evenly throughout the night. It’s also important to stay hydrated, drink around 1/2 pint of water an hour. If you’re on a hot dancefloor, take breaks and cool down every so often.

If you’re gurning, sugar free gum is never a bad idea to keep that under control. If you’re on a long, extended sesh, eating some healthy food at some point will go a long way. Taking higher doses and re-dosing too often increases the intensity and risk of side effects (see the next section).

Know the Risks and Look Out For Them

Like any strong stimulants, cathinones can affect the cardiovascular system and can therefore elevate blood pressure, increase heart rate, cause overheating, insomnia, and palpitations. If you have a heart condition or are pre-disposed to one, you are at an increased risk. Consider if it’s worth it and if you do proceed keep the doses very light.

In high doses, these drugs can make people feel tweaked-out, anxious, or nervous. In really high doses, with sleep deprivation thrown into the mix, it is possible it could tip over into psychological issues such as delusions, panic, or paranoia.

Look out for your friends and anyone around you. Get immediate medical assistance if anyone is experiencing a crushing chest pain, chest tightening, shortness or breath, passing out becoming none-responsive, or having a seizure. If you’re considering getting medical support at all, just call it in to be on the safe side. Paramedics aren’t War on Drugs footsoldiers; you’re not going to get in trouble for getting assistance. Some of the biggest wreck heads I know are doctors and paramedics. Tell them everything that’s gone on.

Don’t Forget to Sleep

I went to uni [that’s college, for any US readers] during the first wave of mephedrone, and I used to know some guys who were making a bunch of money from wholesaling it. It was legal back then, in a criminal sense anyway, although I’m not sure that they were diligently filing their tax returns. These guys all have really professional jobs or successful businesses these days, but back then they were dealers

The nucleus of their business was the kitchen table in their shared student house. MCAT was so cheap back then (£3 a gram or less) that there’d be Scarface-esque mounds of powders dotted around the sesh enclave that was their place. That grimy student table (which was invariably littered with empty cans of beer, packs of king-size rizla, and plates with rolled-up notes perched next to it) was the focal point of a giddy array of ecstatic evenings, mislaid mornings, and forgotten memories in the student city.

People would converge on that table for days on end, riding a bonkers rollercoaster of legal stimulants. Funneling powders into their faces like it was water in a desert. The whole local student population was drinking what they were pouring and sleeping, I’m sure you can imagine, was never very high on the agenda.

One day, several days into the sesh, one of the lads left to get some cigarettes when things suddenly turned very dark. On the way back, a twenty pack of Marlboro in hand, something stopped him dead in his tracks. A masked man holding someone up at gunpoint in a robbery. The victim cowered on the floor, gun to his head and his life presumably flashing before his eyes, while the assailant barked demands like a manic pitbull.

Now, if that sounds a tad extreme, in a country where only a tiny minority of hardened gangsters have access to guns and in a town where the main crimes involve scuffles outside pubs, that’s because it was.

It never happened.

The guy who witnessed it and subsequently reported it to some very confused police officers, was tripping balls. Completely hallucinating. Not off MCAT, but off sleep deprivation. Staying up for days and days on end fucks with you hard because your body doesn’t know if it’s awake or in dream mode. If someone gets to this point, they’re also hurtling towards a drug-induced psychosis if they don’t get some rest. According to this study, anything over 48 hours awake is bad news. Sleep is non-negotiable.

Mixing It With Other Drugs

Mixing drugs increases the risks. Stimulants scooped up and ladled on top of more stimulants isn’t a good idea because it puts a strain on your cardiovascular system. For that reason it’s best to avoid mixing cathinones with drugs like speed (amphetamines), MDMA, meth, or coke. It’s also inadvisable to mix it with opioids, 2C-B and associated drugs, DMT, LSD, drugs from the NBOMe family, and some antidepressant medications (from, for example, the MAOI family). This is not an exhaustive list, research and check any potential interactions between any medication or recreational drugs you take.

Have a Gameplan

Mephedrone can provide spikes in euphoria like MDMA, but only lasts about an hour like coke, and it can produce a pretty dreadful crash after taking it. Those factors together are a recipe for a drug that is hellishly more-ish. The urge to re-dose can be all too real, especially if you’re sniffing it. For that reason, it’s sometimes useful to set a specific intention before the sesh.

You could say to yourself, ‘I’m going to have half a gram tonight.’ If you’re going way over the intended amount every time you’re on the sesh, that could be a warning sign to slow down on cathinones. If you’re finding that you’re losing control more often, forfeiting days to the sesh you didn’t intend to, or neglecting other needs and obligations, you might consider taking a break. If the break doesn’t work out and you realise that you might be struggling, you could consider contacting your local drugs and alcohol services (in the UK, your local GP is a good place to start).

Safer Snorting 1: Use Your Own Equipment

Firstly, when you’re snorting any drugs, use your own equipment. If you’re sharing house keys, banknotes, straws, or one of those tiny spoons that 60% of the punters at Shambala festival wear around their neck, there is a risk of contracting a virus like Hepatitis C. The nasal passage is full of highly-sensitive blood vessels that can swell, tear, and rupture causing bleeding and in the worst cases a sinus infection.

Hep C is a blood-borne pathogen, so if everyone at the afters is using the same banknote to rail slugs of drone it could result in direct blood-to-blood contact. But this risk is easily avoidable, by simply bringing your own straw and keeping it to yourself all night. Using a brand new straw (you can just get an unused drink straw, sanitize it, and cut it in half with a pair of scissors) is a good shout too because dirty banknotes or keys can introduce general germs into the body. Also consider using the straw to snort higher up the nose avoiding contact with the septum as much as possible.

Safer Snorting 2: Crush It Then Crush It Even More

Before the sesh, make sure that the contents of your baggie is prepared. Use hand sanitizer to clean a bank card and plate you’re using during the process, then crush it as finely as possible—then crush it even more. A fine powder is much easier on your nose reducing the risk of damage to the nasal passage. And it’s easier to dose accurately because rocks and shards make it harder to gauge the quantity.

It’s also a good idea to alternate nostrils with each dose (I know, I know—you have a favourite one, but just go with it), and take a break if you get a nosebleed. Places that are good to crush up the contents of the baggie: Your place, before you head out. Bad places to crush up the contents: the back of a dancefloor in a club, a festival port-a-loo, and anywhere you have to do it quickly as there’s an immediate risk of getting busted.

Safer Snorting 3: Protect Your Nose

It’s good to clean your nose after the sesh, but there’s a specific way of doing it. What you don’t want to do is call it a day, collapse into bed like a felled tree, and sleep for nine hours with chemical residue in your nose marinating your nasal passage. Doing this once or twice a year isn’t a disaster, in my opinion, but if you do it every few weeks for years you run the risk of damaging the sensitive mucous membrane. It’s going to eventually result in scarring or in extreme circumstances even worse damage.

“Rinsing out your nose with sterile saltwater is the best harm reduction advice,” Nicholas Calder, an ear, nose and throat consultant and surgeon at NHS Lanarkshire, told me. But don‘t use regular tap water. “If you’re just snorting regular tap water up your nose, it has the potential to introduce infection,” he warns. “For patients that we see who have cocaine damage, we recommend they take saline rinses or saltwater rinses,” he says, “which you can buy over-the-counter from the chemist.” He added: “Or [we] give them a solution to make at home, which is boiled tap water [let it cool down] with some salt and sodium bicarbonate in it. But it is important that it is sterile water.”

I know, I know—this is not an appetizing proposition when you’re perching on the edge of the sesh and you want to fall asleep for a thousand years. But it’s a good habit to get into. The best way in my opinion is to put the saline rinse next to your toothbrush. When you’re about to brush your teeth, a well-worn routine, you’ll notice the rinse and be like, ‘Oh shit, yeah, I need to do this.’ It’s not fun, it feels like you know when you accidentally inhale water in a swimming pool (pretty gross) but worth it to protect your nose.

What Comes Up, Must…

Never book anything important for a time that you know you’ll be on a comedown. No job interviews, no dinner with your Grandma, 100 percent no uni exams. Because the comedown off cathinones, it cannot be sugarcoated, is harsh as fuck. One of the comedowns that makes you feel like a dusty, mouldy potato which has been long-neglected in the back of the cupboard. When you’re so fragile that it feels like you could turn into dust and blow away with the wind.

At this point, all you need is rest, sleep, hydration (isotonic sports drinks and electrolytes for the W), and nutritious food. Take it easy, break out a Netflix series, run a bath, go for a walk. Check in with friends, or if you’re feeling down, arrange to hang out with other people. And always remember: this is a comedown, it’ll pass.

If things get really bad, try not to fall into the trap of re-dosing or re-igniting the sesh. These feelings might be temporarily suspended if you do, but they’ll come back even worse. It’s like a credit card: you spent the money, and you have to pay it back. If the comedowns are getting too much, it’s a sign to leave bigger breaks in between the sesh, to give your body time to recover.
